Animal wellbeing

Our strategy for livestock wellbeing

According to European Commission data, livestock activity is responsible for 81-86% of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions (nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane). The presence of these compounds in the environment causes soil and water pollution, and contributes to global warming and climate change. Furthermore, improper maintenance of livestock farms leads to the spread of bacterial and viral infections, which kill livestock and, with spill-over events, threaten global human health, prompting farmers to increase the administration of antibiotics and medicines.

The significant economic, social and environmental impact of animal farming highlights the need to implement sustainable development in this sector. Indeed, responsible livestock management improves animal health, increases productivity and reduces the spread of infections; it also contributes to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, combating climate change and protecting the environment

The ecological ‘thread’: from animal welfare to environmental protection

Ensuring that livestock farms are optimally managed, in compliance with regulations, is not only a moral obligation for farmers, but also a mission that every consumer should keep in mind. The health of farm animals, in fact, has a direct impact on our health and the balance of the entire ecosystem.

BBA Ecotech stands out as a leader in promoting environmentally friendly practices ranging from animal wellbeing to active environmental protection, contributing significantly to animal health and livestock productivity. In a crucial sector for our planet, the company is championing a more sustainable future for the global ecosystem.

Z-Probios®: probiotic detergent for surface treatment in farms

Milking parlour surfaces take in large amounts of organic matter and proteins every day, leading to the formation of biofilm, which is often also populated by pathogenic bacteria

Z-Probios® is a probiotic-based liquid concentrate biodetergent designed to remove dirt and biofilm deep down from surfaces, counteracting the colonisation of uncontrolled, sometimes pathogenic, and highly resistant microorganisms. Thanks to its activity on biofilm, Z-Probios® thus creates a favourable, controlled and balanced microbial environment in a completely natural way. The biodetergent continues its protective action even outside the milking parlour, directly on the surface of rubber matted cattle kennels and on service or sorting aisles, limiting over time the proliferation of pathogenic populations that can infect the animal's udder

Once disposed of in the drains after use, Z-Probios® continues its action in the drains: the residual microorganisms in the wastewater are still active and able to continue degrading encrustations and organic deposits, thus also counteracting the onset of bad odours.

When Z-Probios® finally reaches the sewage system or storage tanks, it participates in the natural process of wastewater treatment.

Agri-Zoo line for the treatment of animal bedding and slurry

Ammonia emissions from livestock manure are a problem not only from an environmental point of view, but also from that of animal wellbeing. Besides irritating to the sense of smell, they irritate the nasal mucous membranes and eyes. In animals, ammonia emissions damage the epithelial cells of the respiratory system, destroying their natural defences against bacteria and viral agents. They also interfere with the recognition of pheromones, substances essential for the sexual and reproductive development of the animal and alter their life balance.

In summary, high ammonia concentrations negatively affect the life of the animal, with effects on the feed conversion index and its state of health. On the other hand, a dry and healthy bedding is synonymous with a productive, clean and healthy animal.

Continuous commitment to achieving sustainability and many years' experience in the application of microorganisms to biotechnology prompted BBA Ecotech to create the Agri Line, for safe and lasting cleaning of livestock environments.

All products in the Agri Line dedicated to the treatment of litter are applicable in cattle, pig, poultry and horse farms. They fluidify the slurry in the collection tanks, facilitating its reuse in the pumping phase, as well as making it easier to clean the bedding itself, eliminating incrustations and deposits.

BBA Ecotech's main solutions for treating bedding and slurry on livestock farms include:

  • MasterPoultry, suitable for treating liquid and solid manure produced in poultry and rabbit farms.  It offers an immediate advantage on productivity increase, conversion rate and mortality reduction.
  • MasterAgri PIG LQ, specifically for pig farms. Reduces ammonia concentrations from the litter to the manure storage tanks.
  • MasterHorse, specific for the degradation of manure in horse bedding. Its action cleans up the environment, promotes the elimination of odours and contrasts the invasion of flies and other flying insects. It favours the drying of the litter and the maintenance of a healthier environment for the animal.
  • MasterAgriPlus, consisting of plant extracts from the Yucca Schidigera plant, is a natural organic compound that is effectively used to reduce and control odours, ammonia and other animal emissions. Combined with microorganisms, it ensures a complete synergistic effect.
